A top fuel dragster driven by Frank Rupert of Carritos, blew the supercharger off the engine. The dragster turned over several times before it finally hit the guardrail, while the heavy blower bounced 250 yards down the track towards Rooks, knocking him flat. Rooks died en route to the hospital, and Rupert suffered a broken leg and some internal injuries.
