Caption/Description
Brush fires blackened a half-million acres of brushland, killed an undetermined number of animals, and destroyed a hundred homes. As big C-130 tankers bombarded the flames with sticky, red fire retardant, fire fighters, using bulldozers and axes, fought to gain the upper hand on the uncontrollable flames, and homeowners tried to protect their homes.
