The day before the Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Tehran, Prime Minister Shahpur Bakhtiar staged a show of force by parading his army past Tehran's university. All was calm until soldiers in the last truck fired into the crowd, killing and wounding half a dozen students. Demonstrators soaked their hands in the blood of the martyred students to protest.
