President Carter had come home to Plains, GA to vote. It was early election day and his closest advisers had informed him during the trip from Washington that the latest polls showed his defeat was inevitable. Fighting back tears and exhausted, Jimmy Carter spoke to his supporters at the Plains train depot. 'I've tried to honor my commitment' he said.
