Religious squatters drop burning tires in an attempt to block army troops trying to reach their rooftop stronghold by ladder. Thousands of troops began a massive operation to evict withdrawal resisters from this desert, four days before Eastern Sinai is to revert to Egyptian sovereignty under the terms of the 1979 peace treaty.
