Caption/Description
On Tuesday, Oct. 16, in what became known as the “Trojan Horse†incident, South African police hidden beneath cardboard boxes on the back of a truck, suddenly jumped up and fired indiscriminately into a crowd of youths in Athlone near Capetown. Three people were killed and several others were wounded. On the following day, as about 1,000 angry residents lined Athlone’s streets to protest the incident, an armored truck full of military police wheeled around a corner and raced toward the crowd. The mob broke and ran, some screaming. Three soldiers in the truck began firing into the crowd. Soldiers jumped to the ground and chased the fleeing crowd. About five minutes later, they returned dragging 17-year-old Fiazal Jenner into their caspir. The youth’s mother ran from her house, begging, “Give me my son!†The soldiers paid no attention. They loaded the youth into the truck, pushed his mother aside and drove away.
