On the same day, South African troops used bullwhips on a crowd in Athlone, near Capetown, that was gathering for a march to Pollsmoor Prison, where Nelson Mandela is being held. Severe riots broke out in black and colored townships in the Western Cape. Here, black youths raise their fists after setting afire burning tires and debris in Gugeletu Township.
