Mr. Kirkland, covering Olympic tryouts in Dyche stadium, was using a four-Rollei combination electrically operated with remote control hand switch. He didn't expect vaulter to clear bar, so hadn't intended to shoot. The instant pole broke, Kirkland clicked switch, recorded this shot on two cameras. He made pictures of two other poles being broken at same meet.
