Bonita Denny, 20, a terminal leukemia patient, lived in public housing with daughter Kristy, age 2. Her husband was in prison in another state, and she had been unable to get him transferred to an in-state prison so she could visit him. Her total income was $172 a month. Weekly 90 mile trips to a hospital for chemotherapy left her sick and weak.
