A young resident of Gori parades around the city in Russian tank googles given to him by a Russian soldier in an armored personnel carrier. Some stayed behind in Gori, but the majority of the population fled to Tbilisi and other parts of the country unaffected by the fighting. The main east/west highway runs right through Gori and the Russians effectively severed the country in two by taking the city, the birthplace of Josef Stalin.
